Dissolve 10 g yeast in 300 ml warm water with 50 g sugar. Add 500 g flour, 1 tsp salt and 50 g softened butter. Knead into a smooth, soft dough.
⏱️ approx. 12 min💡 Tip: Agege bread is a Nigerian white bread (from Agege, Lagos) — slightly sweet, very soft and dense, with a chewy, elastic texture. A popular breakfast bread, often served with akara or eggs.
- 2
Knead the dough thoroughly (this develops the gluten for the chewy, elastic texture). Let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
⏱️ approx. 12 min💡 Tip: Agege bread is characteristically dense and chewy (not airy like sandwich bread). Thorough kneading and the slightly sweet dough are typical. A little butter makes it tender.
- 3
Shape into a loaf and place in a loaf pan. Let proof. Bake at 180 °C for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. Allow to cool.
⏱️ approx. 12 min💡 Tip: Agege bread is eaten at breakfast — with akara (bean fritters), eggs, butter or as an accompaniment. The soft, slightly sweet crumb is popular. Also great for sandwiches.
📜 Origin & History
Agege Bread (Yoruba: Búrọ̀ọ̀dì Àgégé; English: Agege Bread) is a Nigerian yeasted white bread: a soft, slightly sweet yeast dough made from wheat flour, sugar, margarine or butter, yeast, and milk is baked into a round or oval loaf with a characteristically soft, spongy crumb. Agege Bread is named after the Agege district in Lagos, Nigeria; Agege is a commercial and bakery center with decades of white bread tradition. In Lagos, Agege Bread is the most affordable and widely available street bread; it is eaten at breakfast with Ewa Agoyin (black-eyed peas with chili palm oil sauce) or peanut butter. Agege Bread was shaped by Lebanese and Syrian merchant immigrants in Lagos (since the early 20th century); their baking tradition had a lasting influence on Nigerian white bread production. In Germany, Agege Bread is known as a Nigerian home recipe; Afro-Caribbean food stores carry the bread in some German cities.
